Our bus will take us to the Omalos Plateau in the White Mountains (appr.1100 meters altitude) where we will have a short break for breakfast and coffee. After that we continue to the entrance of the gorge where our walk through the famous, 16 kilometer long Samaria gorge will start. The trail starts at 1237 meters and leads us all the way down to sea level. It offers a rich variety of scenic beauty: mountain views, large, ancient trees, narrow passages, a gurgling stream and at the end the reward of a swim in the Libyan Sea. The gorge is part of the national park that is home to the protected Cretan Wild Mountain Goats. Most people need 5-6 hours for this hike. At the end of the walk you will reach the village Agia Roumeli where you can find taverns, bars and shops. Late in the afternoon the ferry takes us to Sfakia where our bus will wait for us to drive us back to the hotels. Attention: The length of the walk, the very irregular, steep path and the heat during the summer months are a real challenge. We do NOT recommend this walk for small children, pregnant women and people with health problems! Good and solid footwear is absolutely necessary!
